Freeform’s THE FOSTERS is ending after Season 5, but the stories of Callie and Mariana will continue as the network has simultaneously ordered a spinoff series starring Maia Mitchell and Cierra Ramirez.
“First and foremost, we want to thank our fans — our supportive ‘Fosters Family’ — and Freeform for fostering this show,” executive producers Joanna Johnson, Bradley Bredeweg and Peter Paige said in a statement. “It’s been the privilege of our lives to get to shepherd this beautiful family through five seasons of love, laughter, heartbreak, tribulation, and triumph — and message to the world that DNA doesn’t make a family, love does. All while allowing us to explore some of the most pressing social issues of our era. Now that the kids are growing up, it’s time to take them out into the world, to see them make their way into adulthood, continuing their search for identity and love, and the pursuit of their dreams and purpose in this ever changing world.”
The untitled spinoff series received a 13-episode first season order and will follow Mitchell’s Callie and Ramirez’s Mariana, both original cast members, as they “embark on the next phase of their young adult lives.”
It sounds like a similar mold to Freeform’s Grown-ish, which is a spinoff of ABC’s black-ish that follows Yara Shahidi’s character Zoe as she goes off to college.
The Fosters will conclude with a special three-episode miniseries next summer, concluding the original show’s story, which has followed the family of Stef Adams Foster (Teri Polo), a dedicated police officer, and her wife, Lena Adams Foster (Sherri Saum), for five seasons since it premiered on Freeform in 2013.
The final half of The Fosters Season 5 will return on January 9 at 8 p.m. ET on Freeform.
