After seasons of hints and almosts and false starts, the other duo on FXX’s dark relationship comedy YOU’RE THE WORST finally got it on.

In the two-part Season 4 premiere episode, Edgar (Desmin Borges) and Lindsay (Kether Donohue) come to the realization that they’ve become the grown-ups in their quartet with now estranged exes Jimmy (Chris Geere) and Gretchen (Aya Cash).

Despite their new maturity and seriousness, Edgar and Lindsay have some fun imitating their erstwhile friends, all the way through to sleeping together. And a new friends-with-benefits relationship is born!

Of course, Edgar and Lindsay as a romantic pairing has been a possibility on the show from the very beginning, but it was Jimmy and Gretchen’s disastrous proposal night in the Season 3 finale that became the catalyst for them to finally become a reality — three months later.

“We really wanted to follow through with the story we’re telling and make sure it has ripples throughout our entire universe,” showrunner Stephen Falk told Tracking Board. “We really wanted to have the big event of last season, this big betrayal, have an impact on Edgar and Lindsay as well, as we watch them struggle or thrive, in absence, in Edgar’s case with Jimmy, or the too close for comfort nature of Gretchen and Lindsay. They both at the same time – and not coincidentally – are having to really become adults and learn how to have a job and in Lindsay’s case have an apartment, in Edgar’s case take over this house.

“We see them thriving somewhat as lost kids whose parents are getting divorced and they don’t know exactly the order of things, so they’re a little lost. So kind of naturally, in the first episode, they turn to each other in order to find solace, and find that actually, they are both emotionally in other places, yet intellectually, kind of equal. So they are, ironically, able to have a just friends with benefits relationship.”

But despite falling into bed together literally in the midst of pretending to be Jimmy and Gretchen – who began their own long road to couplehood in the pilot with no-strings-attached sex – Edgar and Lindsay are not going to become the show’s next tortured, epic courtship.

“I don’t think so,” Falk said when asked whether Edgar and Lindsay were going to become the new Jimmy and Gretchen. “I don’t think they’re destined to be a great romance. I think they’re buddies who can make each other’s bodies feel good (laughs). It’s kind of interesting watching a successful friends with benefits relationship. At least in real life, I’ve never seen it happen. It’s this idealized thing, but it’s hard to pull off.”

You’re the Worst airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on FXX.
