Jane Got a Gun scribe Brian Duffield will adapt the upcoming YA novel SPONTANEOUS for Awesomeness Films. The novel, which will be published by Dutton in August, comes from The Riverman Trilogy author Aaron Starmer.
The story follows a girl during her senior year at Covington High in suburban New Jersey where everything is going as normally as could be expected, until the day a fellow senior explodes during third period pre-calc. Soon other classmates meet similar fates, forcing the girl and her friends to figure out a way to survive normal high school problems, with the added stress of potentially combusting at any moment.
Duffield will produce with Nicki Cortese through their Jurassic Party shingle, which has a first-look deal with Awesomeness Films. Brian Robbins and Matt Kaplan will produce for Awesomeness, who caught wind of the novel from exec Matt Siemers.
Duffield, who appeared on the 2011 Young & Hungry List and numerous Hit Lists, wrote and produced the coming-of-age horror film The Babysitter, directed by McG. His spec Underwater, which is set up at 20th Century Fox, recently landed director William Eubank.
Starmer is the author of several novels, including The Riverman Trilogy – which includes The Riverman, The Whisper, and The Storyteller – The Only Ones, and Dweeb.
