Danai Gurira is best known for her role as the samurai sword toting Michonne on TV’s The Walking Dead, but she will be taking a break from killing walkers to something more maternal as Afeni Shakur in the Tupac Shakur biopic, ALL EYEZ ON ME.
The film about the late iconic hip hop artist has been filming in Atlanta with Demetrius Shipp Jr. in the starring role. Benny Boom is directing with James G. Robinson and David C. Robinson from Morgan Creek Productions as well as LT Hutton producing. Open Road Films will serve as the distributor. As the person in charge of Tupac’s estate, the real-life Afeni Shakur will serve as an executive producer of the film.
Gurira will step into the shoes of Afeni, who is a political activist and a member of the Black Panthers. She raised Tupac to be politically aware as well as an avid reader which eventually molded him into the artist he became. The film will follow Tupac’s rise to stardom which includes his prolific music, controversial time at Death Row Records, his acting career, as well as the East Coast/West Coast rap war.
In addition to her TV acting in The Walking Dead, Gurira has also starred in the films The Visitor and Mother of George. She also penned the play, Eclipsed which will move to Broadway with actress Lupita N’yongo starring. Her other play, Familiar will open off-Broadway in March.
Gurira is repped by UTA.
