David Lowery Makes Friends With “Pete’s Dragon”

by: Sammy Mink

will not only to write the script for PETE’S DRAGON but is now in talks to direct the remake. The original 1977 story follows a lonely orphaned boy named Pete who leaves his abusive foster family and arrives in a small fishing village in Maine where he is befriended by a dragon named Elliott. This version, co-written by Lowery and Toby Halbrooks, will re-invent the core of the film, moving away from the musical aspect of the original.

Although Lowery doesn’t have many directing credits to his name, the projects he has directed are getting a lot of buzz in the indie community. “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints” premiered at Sundance last year which landed him projects like “To Be Two” and “The Old Man and the Gun,” a crime/drama starring Robert Redford.

Going from indies to Disney is a big step up for Lowery, but with his impressive body of work behind him, I think he’ll be just fine.
