The Tracking Board has confirmed that 20th Century Fox is jumping into the musical world with ATLANTIS, a pitch they won inspired by musician Pharrell Williams. The artist took the pitch out to studios last week with Gil Netter and Fox solidified the deal. Spring Awakening director Michael Mayer is set to helm the project, while Toy Story 4 screenwriter Martin Hynes will pen the script.
Said to be a Romeo & Juliet style musical set in Virginia Beach, the project is inspired by Williams’ own childhood.
The film will be produced by Williams and Mimi Valdes via I Am Other and Netter with Netter Productions.
Williams has won 10 Grammys and released two solo albums, In My Mind and G I R L. On the film side, he recently produced and wrote songs for Hidden Figures, as well as producing Roxanne Roxanne. He’s represented by WME.
Mayer directed the upcoming Saoirse Ronan flick The Seagull. He’s repped by WME.
Hynes wrote Curious George for Imagine and Universal. He’s repped by Original Artists.
