Not long after Chuck Pratt announced he’d be stepping down as showrunner from the Fox series STAR, the network has announced his replacement in the form of Karin Gist. This will be the third showrunner the series has had, after Pratt took over the reins from Charles Murray at the start of the first season.
Created by Lee Daniels and considered a sister series to Empire, the show follows three sisters navigating the road to success in the music industry, featuring original music. Queen Latifah and Benjamin Bratt co-star in the series.
The series has consistently seen lower — and disappointing — ratings than its predecessor, although its March season finale saw a slight uptick, earning a 1.3 demo rating and a little over 4 million viewers. Still, these numbers are minuscule next to Empire‘s, which typically sees at least 9 million viewers, and sometimes several million more.
The longevity of Star remains to be seen but with more consistent leadership at the helm, it might have a bright future.
Beyond serving as an executive producer on Grey’s Anatomy, Gist has also worked on One Tree Hill, House of Lies, and Revenge. She’s represented by ICM and 3 Arts Entertainment.
