Superstars Kevin Hart and Ice Cube will buckle in for RIDE ALONG 3, the third installment of the Universal action comedy franchise. Tim Story, who helmed Ride Along and Ride Along 2, is expected to return to the director’s chair. Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi are penning the script based on the story by Greg Coolidge. Story details are being kept under wraps.
The first film focuses on an undercover officer (Ice Cube) who’s future brother-in-law, a wisecracking security guard (Hart), joins him on an overnight shift to prove that he is worthy of his future bride – assuming he can survive it. The second film finds the future brother-in-law, now a police academy graduate, joining a high-profile drug case in an effort to become a detective.
Ice Cube will produce through his CubeVision shingle with Will Packer and Matt Alvarez.
The first Ride Along, released in 2014, made just over $150 million worldwide against a modest $25 million budget. The follow-up took in $125 million against a $40 million budget. The films help bolster Ice Cube’s long-standing box office prowess while securing Hart as a serious draw in the action comedy genre. Hart’s stand-up special, What Now?, is getting a wide theatrical release this weekend and is expected to take the number one spot at the box office.
