Rooney Mara is in talks to play Mary Magdalene in the Garth Davis-directed biopic from Universal Pictures International Productions. MARY MAGDALENE, described as “an authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history,” would be a re-team for the director and Oscar-nominated actress, who worked together on Lion, due out in fall of this year.
Magdalene, a devoted follower of Jesus Christ who is believed to have witnessed his crucifixion and resurrection, developed a reputation during the Middle Ages as being a repentant prostitute, though none of the Gospels support that description.
Mara can currently be seen opposite Cate Blanchett in Todd Haynes’ Carol, for which Mara earned her second Academy Award nomination. She has also co-starred in Her, The Social Network, and earned her first Oscar nom as the lead in David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Mara can next be heard in the animated feature Kubo and the Two Strings.
Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett penned the script for Mary Magdalene. Film4 co-developed the biopic with See-Saw Films. See-Saw’s Iain Canning and Emile Sherman, the team behind The King’s Speech, Shame, and Macbeth, will produce.
