Based on the novel by Ernie Cline, the story follows a teenager named Wade Watts who escapes his bleak surrounds by logging into Oasis, a globally networked virtual utopia where users lead idyllic alternate lives. When the game’s eccentric billionaire creator dies, he offers up his fortune as the prize in an elaborate treasure hunt, one that leaves Watts pitted against powerful corporate foes and several ruthless competitors who’ll do anything, in the Oasis or the real world, to reach the treasure first.
Warner Bros. acquired the rights to the novel in 2012 in a bidding war, prior to the novel’s release. The studio has stated that Spielberg is the dream director for the project. The studio was previously in talks with Christopher Nolan regarding the project.
Known for his industry changing epics such as Jaws and Raiders of the Lost Ark, Spielberg is set to direct the upcoming film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved classic children’s novel The BFG.
Spielberg is repped by CAA.
