This weekend The Dark Knight Rises continued the box office domination, dropping 60% to still retain #1 over the weekend. Meanwhile returning entry “Ice Age: Continental Drift” won second place with a paltry $13.3 million (this will be the lowest earner in the “Ice Age” franchise) and new debut “The Watch” struggled to find eyes for any of their A-list stars.
Despite the somber mood across the country following the tragic shooting in Aurora, “The Dark Knight Rises” opened to the highest-grossing opening weekend for a 2D film, and the third highest-grossing opening weekend of all time.
The fourth entry in the “Ice Age” series opened at #1, while “The Amazing Spider-Man” crossed the $200 million mark domestically.
“The Amazing Spider-Man” scores with a $140 million six-day opening; “Savages” fizzles to a fourth place bow.
Strong openings from “Ted” and “Magic Mike” make for highest-grossing June weekend ever.
