“Django Unchained” producer Pilar Savone and Nathalie Marciano of 26 Films have just set up the action thriller SAFE CORE. The script was penned by scribe Elliot San, a spec-writing machine who set up two scripts in 2013 and is on the way to repeating that success this year.
The plot is officially under wraps, but was pitched largely in the vein of “Panic Room.” We know it will be a contained thriller and have military elements as well, so there is a lot of room to play with the action elements and heighten the storyline.
San, who was featured on 2013 Hit List, set up “All the Good Ones Get Away,” and an “Untitled Sci-Fi Action Thriller” last year in tandem with reps WME and manager Brooklyn Weaver of Energy Entertainment. He continues to churn out material, and is definitely a writer who demands attention, as he may very well surpass last year’s setup record.
Manager Brooklyn Weaver himself is also red-hot, setting up 14 of 16 specs that he went out with last year. He topped our TB Year-in-Review Spec Book with one of the highest set-up percentages in the industry, and continues to be aggressive with finding new talent and knowing the spec market like the back of his hand.
Producer Pilar Savone has worked with director Quentin Tarantino numerous times in the past, including an Associate Producer credit on “Grindhouse” and “Inglorious Basterds,” making the jump to producer on “Django Unchained.” Her involvement, along with the action elements of the script may hint at a possible Tarantino involvement, yet there is no word on that at the moment. Nathalie Marciano of 26 Films has recently produced “Love, Wedding, Marriage” and “Anna,” and currently has three other films in development.
