The Jetsons scribe Matt Lieberman has sold his spec FREE GUY to 20th Century Fox with Greg Berlanti attached to produce. The project is described as in the vein of The Truman Show. The script made the 2012 Hit List and Lieberman was featured on the 2013 Young and Hungry List.
The story follows a bank teller who is stuck in his routine until he discovers he’s a background character in a realistic, open world, action-adventure video game, and he is the only one capable of saving the world.
Berlanti and Sarah Schechter are producing through Berlanti Productions with Madhouse’s Adam Kolbrenner. Robyn Meisinger is executive producing for Madhouse. Mike Ireland will be the Fox executive.
Lieberman is currently writing the animated Jetsons remake for Warner Bros. and did previous drafts on Disney’s remake of Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. He is also worked with Warner Bros. on the script for Spy vs. Spy and next year’s SCOOB.
Berlanti is well known for the big stamp he’s made in television, where he is the producer on The CW-DC franchise which includes Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl. The four series are currently building to a massive crossover event later this month.
