British actor Richard Armitage, who played dwarf hero Thorin in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, has been cast in the highly anticipated OCEAN’S EIGHT from director Gary Ross. The spinoff hails from Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow with a script co-written by Ross and Olivia Milch.
Details of his characters are being kept under wraps, but we know he won’t be playing the villain (or at least the main villain) as that role belongs to Damian Lewis. Whatever his role is, he’ll be joining female capers Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna, and Awkwafina, as well as the recently cast James Corden as an insurance investigator.
Ocean’s Eleven director Steven Soderbergh is producing with Susan Ekins who’s attached as executive producer. Jesse Ehrman and Greg Silverman are overseeing for Warner Bros.
Armitage can currently be seen in the series Berlin Station. Best known for his supporting roles in series like Robin Hood, Spooks, and the last season of Hannibal, as well as his lead role in The Hobbit franchise, Armitage has recently wrapped production on two upcoming films: Brain on Fire, starring Chloe Grace Moretz, and the period drama Pilgrimage.
