Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman are producing miniseries FACTORY MAN for HBO under their Playtone banner. Based on Beth Macy’s nonfiction book, the project follows the story of the Bassett family through the 20th century, chronicling the family’s furniture manufacturing company as one of the biggest employers in their Virginia hometown. By the 21st century, the business was threatened, which prompted them to outsource their business to China to keep the family legacy intact. Hanks and Goetzman will executive produce, while Steven Shareshian will co-executive produce and Peter McGuigan will co-produce.
Playtone and HBO have long collaborated on miniseries, starting with “Band of Brothers,” before moving on to “John Adams” and “The Pacific.” Currently, the two companies are developing the Ken Burns miniseries “Jack Johnson” and John Curran’s miniseries “Lewis and Clark,” which will star Casey Affleck.
