Fans of the cult horror franchise should start widening their peepers, because it appears that JEEPERS CREEPERS 3 is actually happening. Life of the project has up until this point only existed rumors and well-wishing, but now the horror threequel is officially in development, with production anticipated to launch in early 2016.
Myriad Pictures, who produced the 2004 sequel Jeepers Creepers 2, has announced that they’re financing, and is expected to launch international sales at TIFF. Writer/director Victor Salva, who’s the mastermind behind the other films, is back at the mantle, with Jonathan Breck returning to reprise his role as the eponymous Creeper. Franchise star Brandon Smith is also returning as Sergeant Davis Tubbs.
Francis Ford Coppola, who executive produced Creepers 1 and 2, is now producing via his American Zoetrope, along with Kirk Shaw and Surai Gohill’s Odyssey Media. Stan Spry is also producing under his banner, The Cartel. Myriad’s Kirk D’Amico is executive producing.
The original Jeepers Creepers, which starred a young Justin Long, was released in 2001 and quickly gained cult status among horror aficionados. The two films have grossed a combined $120 million throughout their run, and fans have been clamoring for another installment for over a decade.
Regarding the plot, Salva has revealed, “Jeepers Creepers 3 will show events on the last day of the Creeper’s twenty-three day feeding frenzy, as the skeptical Sergent Tubbs teams up with a task force hellbent on destroying the Creeper for good. The Creeper fights back in gory glory as its enemies grow closer than ever before to learning the secret of its dark origins.”
Regarding his return to the cult series, Salva continued,
“Writing and directing a new Jeepers film, the first in over a decade, is incredibly exciting. For me and I believe for Jeepers fans all over the world that have been asking for more. What will go before cameras as Jeepers Creepers 3 is a new and terrifying chapter from the Jeepers universe. We are bringing back the Creeper’s truck, and will be addressing the big questions about The Creeper: what it is, where it came from and why it does what it does. More exciting though, this will easily be the most frightening rollercoaster -ride -of- a-Jeepers film that has been made to date.”
