Showtime has announced that they will not pick up a fifth season of the drama Masters of Sex. Starring Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan, the series is based on the real-life William Masters and Virginia Johnson, who were considered pioneers of human sexuality. The announcement comes shortly after the recently wrapped fourth season.
MASTERS OF SEX
Season 4, Episode 10 – Despite a strong start to the season, the Season 4 finale of Masters of Sex left a lot to be desired. It’s still not clear if the show will be renewed for a fifth season but at this point, it might be best if show bows out now, before it gets even worse.
Season 4, Episode 9 – Everything Masters of Sex has been doing for the past four season has been building up to this — to Bill and Virginia’s marriage — but it’s unclear if the show has a future beyond this.
Season 4, Episode 8 – Bill and Virgina made exciting progress on their relationship, and Nancy proved her true colors in last night’s episode of Masters of Sex.
Season 4, Episode 7 – There’s still a sour taste from last week’s episode, but luckily there were several enjoyable scenes setting up for some potentially good arcs in this week’s episode, even if it was overly stuffed.
Season 4, Episode 6 – Masters of Sex had a major and problematic character death last night and it placed a dark cloud over the remainder of the season.
Season 4, Episode 5 – This week, Masters of Sex decided to prioritize dramatic storytelling over practicality. In many ways, television shows do this a lot and often it is the better choice to make. While plenty of the courtroom drama didn’t exactly make sense, there continued to be good character work this week that elevated the episode.
Season 4, Episode 4 – This was the best episode of Masters of Sex in the new season yet and there were some truly excellent character moments setting up for great arcs and tension over the course of the season.
Season 4, Episode 3 – This week’s Masters of Sex proves the show is getting back to top form, as it explores new aspects of sex and reveals several promising character moments.
Season 4, Episode 2 – The writers need to work on something specific this season — the likability of their two lead characters. Luckily, actors Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan are more than up to the task as they continue making the characters enjoyable to watch, even through all of Bill and Virginia’s faults and imperfect personalities.
Season 4, Episode 1 – Masters of Sex nearly collapsed in on itself last season, but last night’s fourth season premiere proved the writers are aware they have some serious course-correcting to do. Its smaller character moments are signs the show is hopefully getting back to what it made it such a revelation only a couple of years ago.
