‘Hell Bent’ was a complicated episode to say the least, and a mere few hours after watching it, I still don’t know if I have digested it all, nor if I missed critical points hidden expertly throughout the dialogue.
This episode of Doctor Who was unlike anything we have seen before. Throughout the entire episode there was only a single speaking part, The Doctor. Knowing this I was skeptical going in, but eventually blown away by Peter Capaldi’s performance, albeit confused by some of the story.
This entire season of Doctor Who there has been a buzz around Clara leaving the show and how it would happen. Tonight was a fitting good-bye to the impossible girl who turned impossibly reckless.
This week’s Doctor Who had the strong feeling of a filler episode. The previous two episodes (The Zygon Inversion and The Zygon Invasion) were emotionally powerful, action packed, and overall very entertaining, which may have actually hurt this episode.
An emotionally packed conclusion to the Zygon story delivers. It officially ushers in the era of the 12th Doctor. Whereas previous incarnations having been running from the War Doctor, this version seems to have finally allowed him to become part of himself. We saw a raw, emotional side to The Doctor that rarely ever comes to the surface.
20 million Zygons have been living on Earth, but some of them are done pretending to be humans. The war has begun. What three Doctors started, the 12th Doctor must put an end too.
This episode’s story arch could more or less be summed up in 30 seconds. The Doctor finds Ashildr mid robbery. They are both after an alien jewel. After obtaining it, The Doctor finds out how much the years of immortality have changed Ashildr. Now the big reveal…
Vikings, aliens, and emotions come bubbling to the surface. Doctor Who delivers on characters but in a predictable story. We saw a deeply emotional Doctor. One whose travels and losses have begun to take a toll, which the Time Lord cannot longer hide.
